Can Modern Technology Revitalise Your Old Products?

edge computing electronics

In our rapidly evolving digital world, electronics can become outdated in the blink of an eye. But that doesn't mean your legacy devices have to gather dust on the shelf. At Xor Systems, we specialise in redesigning and modernising electronics from previous decades.

Breathing New Life Into Older Tech

Our team of expert engineers and designers have a passion for older technology. We understand the craftsmanship and innovation that went into creating the electronics of the past. That's why we approach every redesign project with reverence, preserving the essence of the original design while enhancing it with modern components and features.

Future-Proof Your Investment

By redesigning your legacy electronics, you can extend their lifespan and ensure they remain relevant in today's fast-paced technological landscape. Our redesigns not only improve performance and functionality but also incorporate the latest security protocols and compatibility standards, future-proofing your investment.

Redesigning electronics often means redesigning software. Updating legacy designs enables us to incorporate the latest software technology. This further improves security and performance while also allowing new user intefaces to be constructed and connectivity to be added through WiFi, Bluetooth, and Cellular.

Sustainable Approach

At our core, we believe in promoting sustainability and reducing electronic waste. By redesigning and repurposing existing electronics, we minimise the need for new resource-intensive manufacturing processes. Our redesigns breathe new life into your devices, reducing their environmental impact and contributing to a greener future.

TTL Logic to FPGA - How We Revitalise Your Technology

Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) offer flexibility and parallelism, making them suitable for various applications, including redesigning and modernising legacy electronics. We have incorporated TTL (Transistor-Transistor Logic) designs into FPGAs, with an enormous reduction in the size of the electronics. A simpler design, increased speed and much less power are all benefits.

Additionally, when designing FPGA-based systems, it's essential to follow best practices for code readability, modularity, and optimisation. Techniques like pipelining, resource sharing, and clock gating can help optimise the design for performance, power consumption, and resource usage.

By incorporating these techniques and following best practices, designers can successfully integrate TTL designs into FPGAs, enabling the modernisation and revitalisation of legacy electronics while leveraging the flexibility and parallelism offered by FPGAs.

Modern processors

Another approach we have taken is to replace a legacy design with one or more processors. We have found that our designs result in a number of small processors scattered over the board, each one performing a dedicated function. Rather than designing discrete electronics, we code the functionality into an appropriate processor.

We often encounter old processor designs, with obsolete processors running machine code. It's how things used to be done. Now, we're keen to use 32-bit, low power processors and writing the code in C for easy portability.

We tend to favour the STM32 processor, which is available in a wide range of sizes and packages. At the top end of the range, there are designs with DSP functionality, at the bottom, there are simple 8-pin devices - a complete 32-bit ARM processor in an 8 pin package. Most of the designs allow an easy choice of RAM and Flash sizes, so it is easy to scale up or down according to code requirements.

Modern Software for Old Projects

Networking

Networking

Networking is essential in modern technology. We can redesign your products in order to incorporate the most up-to-date connectivity technologies (5G, LoRA, WiFi, BLE) to enable remote data monitoring, Over-The-Air updates, remote access for troubleshooting and security. Additionally, for customer facing products, this enables a new paradigm for customer control and interaction.

UI and Interfaces

User Interfaces for the Modern Era

Modern, simple, and friendly UI can expand your customer base. We have implemented control and monitoring UIs in the form of mobile apps, desktop programs, websites, and TUIs. We can also provide new data management backends in the form of database viewers or AWS interfaces.
